Media Invitation: British Neuroscience Association National Meeting
April 03, 2003The British Neuroscience Association (BNA) is about to host its 17th National Meeting in Harrogate (13-16 April) and is attracting more delegates than ever before. With seven plenary lectures, 20 symposia and over 40 poster sessions, this will be quite a neuroscience festival for the UK. It will be supported by a full scale exhibition and numerous peripheral events, including a workshop on the 'Public Understanding of Science' that will be addressed by Lord Robert Winston, and a presentation of 'The Foresight Cognitive Systems Project', a new government initiative to foster interaction between neuroscientists and the computer industry.
'The quality of science on display this year is particularly high, so it is little wonder that so many people are supporting us', said Dr Yvonne Allen, who has organised the event. 'Collaborating for the first time with The Biochemical Society has also been remarkably successful and has certainly enhanced the wider appeal of this major meeting', she added.
Among the most popular symposia will be the discussion on neural stem cells and their capacity to repair lesions in the nervous system; the effects of injury on the developing brain; the role of dopamine in the neurobiology of reward, and an up-to- date look at the mechanisms of memory formation. The latest advances in our understanding of ageing and dementia, and a review of progress in clinical neuroscience are symposia that also look set to attract the largest crowds. And with sessions discussing neuronal rhythms, and the very latest in neuroinformatics and neuroimaging, there will surely be 'something for everyone' at this exciting and eclectic gathering.
Over 400 abstracts will be presented as posters in themes that broadly cover all the major neuroscience fields, ranging from molecular and cellular neurobiology to disorders of the nervous system and the neural basis of behaviour. With nearly 250 students attending, some of them presenting posters for the first time, the scene is set to be rather lively!
