£500,000 Donation for Complementary Medicine at Peninsula Medical School
February 11, 2003A donation of £500,000 has been made by the Maurice Laing Foundation to fund the Peninsula Medical School's Chair in Complementary Medicine, held by Professor Edzard Ernst.
This is the second major gift made by the Maurice Laing Foundation to Complimentary Medicine at the Peninsula Medical School. It represents a total donation to the School of £2,000,000.
Professor Ernst established the Chair of Complementary Medicine in 1993 at the University of Exeter, having previously served as Head of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department at the University of Vienna. The winner of eight major academic prizes, Professor Ernst took British nationality in 1999.
Professor Ernst commented: 'We are absolutely delighted at this major gift from the Maurice Laing Foundation, which is a great show of support for our work. As part of the new Peninsula Medical School there are many opportunities for collaborative research and we can now look to the future with confidence.'
The Peninsula Medical School Foundation raises funds to directly support the cutting edge research carried out by the School into areas such as diabetes, vascular research, cancer, multiple sclerosis and new variant CJD as well as how to improve healthcare quality and the education of tomorrow's healthcare professionals. The Foundation also aims to raise money to support a limited number of bursaries at the School, specifically designed to attract financially disadvantaged students with the skill, aptitude and motivation to train in the medical profession.
"Already the School has an excellent research reputation," said Professor Tooke. "We aim to generate £5,000,000 of funding to develop a South West medical research facility with a global reputation which will impact on future medical healthcare. All money raised is used in the South West region and will positively impact upon the local communities."
