£21M for Tomorrow's Technology: Research Councils UK News ReleaseJanuary 15, 2003Research Councils UK announces seven projects to benefit from latest round of funding for Basic Technology Programme. Computer codes that defy the fraudster, more efficient ways of diagnosing and treating disease and new techniques in oil exploration. These are just some of the potential benefits to society of the next seven research projects being funded through the Basic Technology Programme. This announcement from Research Councils UK is the second round of money to come from the Basic Technology Programme, which crosses all of the UK's science Research Councils. The Programme's main purpose is to support the development of fundamental new technology that will apply to the entire scope of scientific, engineering and technology endeavour in the next 10 to 20 years. The initiative is already pushing forward the frontiers of basic science. Director General of the Research Councils Dr John Taylor said: "Realising the potential of Basic Technology research is a crucial element in the innovation process. The benefits of this work will feed not only into science but will also underpin major new industries of the future." In the 2002 Spending Review the Government announced further funding for the Basic Technology Programme, which was set up following the previous Spending Review in 2000 with an initial investment of £41M. Combined funding for the Programme over the two Review periods is now £104M. The third call for proposals for the Basic Technology Programme is due to be announced shortly. | |||||||||||||||||||||
