Milking itJanuary 15, 2003A Northumbria University graduate plans to milk a new technique he has devised to turn recycled plastic milk bottles into furniture. Currently the recycled bottles are made into plastic block type outdoor furniture but designer Richard Liddle, 24, has developed a technique to mould and laminate the material to create curves - something never before achieved. Richard, originally of Spennymoor in Co. Durham, hopes the furniture could be particularly useful for business start-ups in the region because the material is cheap to create. "I understand I'm the first person to make this material usable for furniture in the home and office. The material in its furniture state can last for around 100 years, but can be endlessly recycled so it has great environmental benefits.'' Richard, who has just graduated with a Masters Degree in Design from Northumbria University, has set up his own design and innovation house called ''Cohda Design'' - adhoc backwards (to form and arrange objects for a particular purpose). Cohda's aim is to plug niches for clients with exceptionally designed marketable products with their environmental impact sustained. He said: "It's time that the North East started to receive its recognition as catalyst for creative talent and to find some way of holding it within the region.'' Richard added: "This project is all about saving the planet by turning what most people class as rubbish into something aesthetically pleasing and valuable. The world has limited resources so this business is about more than furniture design - it's about making a statement about the planet and the way forward with design.'' A discarded alloy wheel is one such discarded item that Richard used as the centrepiece of a coffee table. He is also currently working in conjunction with Toucan Engineering in Middlesbrough to create products for a new mode of green transport as well as I4Ideas in Gateshead developing a furniture range and lighting product both due for production shortly. | |||||||||||||||||||||
