Students Face Navy ChallengeJanuary 14, 2003Students from across the region were given the ultimate test when they serviced the parts of a Sea-King helicopter at the University of Bradford recently. Around 70 Year-11 and Year-12 students from seven schools across the region took part in the event. The schools were: Oak Bank, Oakworth, near Haworth; South Craven, Cross Hills, Keighley; Huddersfield New College, Huddersfield; Hanson, Bradford; Ilkley Grammar, Ilkley; Boston Spa and Benton Park, Leeds. The group were challenged to build a model of a crane system that will lift the rotor head off a Sea-King helicopter. School of Engineering, Design & Technology Admission Liaison Officer, Joanne Crowther, said: "This is a standard task which the Navy carries out on board ship and one which the students would have to deal with if they were in service at sea. It's a hands-on project which will test the students' design and problem solving skills to the limit." Working in teams, the students had to design and construct a scale model with a lifting mechanism that allowed the team to lift the rotor head off a Sea-King helicopter, put it on deck, pick it up and replace it back onto the helicopter. Technical staff from the Navy were available to act as consultants. Though there was an element of competition, the emphasis was on trying to ensure that all teams achieved a high level of success and gained experience of real engineering and working in teams. The task was designed to promote awareness of engineering with youngsters and the part that engineering plays in the modern Navy. The event encouraged students to consider technology and engineering as possibilities for a challenging and rewarding career. | |||||||||||||||||||||
