Next Director of Roslin Institute announcedDecember 18, 2002BBSRC today announced that the scientist behind the transgenic sheep that marked a breakthrough in generating human therapeutic proteins in milk is to be the next Director of the Roslin Institute. Professor John Clark will be appointed as Director of the world's leading animal biotechnology research centre in August 2003. "John is an excellent appointment for the Roslin Institute", say BBSRC Chief Executive Julia Goodfellow. "His research on the development of transgenic animals for the production of pharmaceutical proteins in milk has helped establish the Roslin Institute as a world-leading centre for research in animal biotechnology. Under his direction, the Institute will continue to flourish - building upon the many successes of his predecessor." Professor Clark commented, "I am very much looking forward to the challenges of leading Roslin and consolidating its position as one of the world's leading research institutes." Professor Clark has been a Head of Department at Roslin since 1993, having worked as Group Leader at the Institute since 1985. He pioneered the development of transgenic livestock at the Institute and has overseen the establishment of the Institute's research programme on human embryonic stem cells. Professor Clark has extensive experience in knowledge transfer, having founded three successful spin-out companies from Roslin: PPL Therapeutics, Rosgen and Roslin BioMed. He will succeed Professor Grahame Bulfield, who has moved to the University of Edinburgh as Vice-Principal and Head of College of Science and Engineering. Professor Clark studied Natural Sciences at Christ's College, Cambridge, an MSc at the University of Western Ontario in Canada and undertook a Ph.D. in Genetics at the University of Edinburgh. He was awarded the OBE for services to the biotechnology industry in 1997. Professor Clark is married with two children. | |||||||||||||||||||||
