Aiming at a deeper understanding of the maintenance of health
December 10, 2002Projects selected for Microbes and Man Research Programme.
The projects that will be funded under the umbrella of the Microbes and Man Research Programme have been selected. Among the areas and issues covered in these projects are allergies, intestinal immune defence mechanisms, the role of microbes in cardiovascular diseases and the impacts of probiots in humans. The programme is jointly funded by the Academy of Finland and the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research.
The aim of the programme is to shed light on the interactions between host and microbes and to apply the knowledge that is generated to the maintenance of health and to the prevention and treatment of diseases.
The two funding bodies have joined forces in the programme with a view to encouraging closer collaboration among researchers; to promoting researcher training; to creating competitive research environments; to raising the scientific standards of research and increasing its international visibility; and to providing a boost to communications as well as the application of research results. A total of EUR 5.4 million has been earmarked for the programme, with the Academy accounting for the bulk or EUR 4.1 million and the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research for the remaining EUR 1.3 million.
