Contact lenses and catapults - recognising the achievements of physics students

Three outstanding students have won prizes from the Institute of Physics for their course work in Advancing Physics, the Institute’s new physics A level course. Dr Julia King, the Institute’s Chief Executive, presented the students with their prizes at a ceremony organised by the OCR examining board in London on 28 November.

Institute of Physics Prize for Physics in Practice 2002 for AS level students
Tomasz Mazur, Stonyhurst College, Blackburn, Lancashire.

Contact lenses were the subject of Tomasz’s materials research project, which in part won him this prize. He created a web site about the polymer PHEMA, which is used in making contact lenses, which explained the properties needed to create user-friendly contact lenses. Tomasz’s teacher said, “He has a very keen interest in modern physics, but also a surprisingly good grasp of it. He needed little encouragement.”

Bill Trotter Prize for the Practical Investigation 2002 for A level students
Alex Haberis, Brentwood School, Brentwood, Essex.

Alex’s unusual idea for his investigation was to plan and build an effective trebuchet – a kind of medieval catapult. He considered the relevant physical principles and tested how various factors affected the range and efficiency of the projectile. Alex’s teacher said, “It was his intense involvement, insight and attention to detail that turned a good idea into an impressive piece of work.”

Tom Whyntie, Saint Vincent College, Gosport, Hampshire.

Tom has shown his flair and commitment to physics a second time, after winning the Institute of Physics Prize for Physics in Practice last year. His winning research report, What is mass?, explored the deeper meaning behind the everyday concept of mass. Tom’s teacher said, “It really is exceptional to find a student who has the ability to understand fundamental physics and who can communicate these ideas to a wider audience.”
