Professor Eero Vuorio to chair the EMBL CouncilNovember 29, 2002Professor Eero Vuorio has been elected to chair the Council of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in 2003. His predecessor Professor Peter Gruss has assumed office as President of the Max-Planck Society. Professor Vuorio is Professor in Molecular Biology at the University of Turku, Finland, and Chair of the Research Council for Health at the Academy of Finland. Professor Vuorio is the national EMBL Council delegate since 2000, and recently Vice Chair. The Academy of Finland is the Finnish cooperation organisation of the EMBL. The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is an international research organisation, established in 1974, and supported by sixteen countries. Finland has been a member of the EMBL since 1984. The EMBL's mission is to conduct high-level research in molecular biology in the main Laboratory in Heidelberg (Germany), in the Outstations in Hamburg (Germany), Grenoble (France) and Hinxton (the U.K.), and in the external Research Programme in Monterotondo (Italy). The Laboratory's unique feature is to combine in new ways the most modern methods of biological research to solving key biological research problems. The Main Laboratory has focused on carrying out research in structural biology, cell biology, developmental biology, gene expression and molecular biology, and on developing new instrumentation for biological research. The Outstations in Hamburg and Grenoble carry out research in molecular structural biology by using the special properties of the international and national synchrotron radiation facilities located nearby. Hinxton (European Bioinformatics Institute - EBI) is a centre for research and services in bioinformatics. The Monterotondo Programme is located on a campus which provides several transgenic mouse research programmes and infrastructures. The EMBL also provides an international PhD programme with an annual call for applications. The next application deadline is 3rd January 2003. The programme runs for 3.5 years and the costs of the PhD student are covered for the whole period. The researcher works at the Main Laboratory in Heidelberg or in some of the three EMBL Outstations (Grenoble, Hamburg or Hinxton) or in the mouse biology programme in Monterotondo. | |||||||||||||||||||||
