Mixing without side effectsNovember 28, 2002The range of micromixers offered by IMM is also suitable for processes susceptible to fouling, especially in fine chemistry and pharmaceutics. The new „Interdigital-separation-layer-mixers" are replacing the present generation of „Separation-layer-mixers". The new mixer system has been adapted especially to industrial processes that involve fouling-intensive organometallic reactions, or even inorganic powder syntheses, for instance with calcium carbonate. The Interdigital-separation-layer-mixer is based on the principle of multi-lamination. The insertion of a separation layer delays the mixing process. The thickness of the separation layer can be specifically adjusted through variation of the flow rate of the separating fluid. This way, diffusive mixing takes place in an area outside the microstructures that are otherwise susceptible to fouling. The Interdigital-separation-layer-mixer reliably prevents fouling processes inside and close to the channels of the outlet zone, which are only 150 µm wide. Micromixers are well suited for application in fast reaction processes. If, however, solid reaction products (e.g. calcium carbonate) or by-products are generated in the mixing process, the channels of the mixers, which are only a few microns wide, may be subject to clogging. This effect called "fouling" puts a huge restraint on the industrial application of micromixers. Apart from the stacked separation-layer-mixer, IMM also offers the „Impinging-jet-micromixer, another type of anti-fouling mixer. | |||||||||||||||||||||
