Liverpool cell-imaging scientists receive £1million boost

Leading cell-imaging scientists in the School of Biological Sciences, at the University of Liverpool, have today received a boost of over £1million to carry out research that could lead to the improved detection and treatment of killer diseases such as heart disease and cancer.

The research project is only one of 6 biotechnology projects in the UK to share in over £8million of Government funding and signals Liverpool's growing reputation as a leading centre for biotechnology.

Dr Mike White at Liverpool University will head up this a five year interdisciplinary, inter-institutional programme of research, which also involves know-how from the University of Manchester and UMIST.

The Liverpool project utilises leading edge expertise in imaging techniques for genes which is based in the School of Biological Sciences. It will develop improved methods for analysing genes to speed up the screening of genes, and this will help researchers to develop new treatment and drugs. Significant interest has also been attracted from major UK-based companies involved in pharmaceuticals, computing and scientific instrumentation.

The success of Liverpool scientists is a further example that Liverpool is a leading biotechnology region in the UK. The £23million Biosciences Centre and Incubator is nearing completion on Crown Street, providing world-class research and business incubation facilities for the bioscience community in the region.

Liverpool was recently host to a major International conference for biotechnologists attracting over 600 scientists, including 2 Nobel Laureates, from across the world to the City.

Announcing the success of the grants Science Minister, Lord Sainsbury said:

"These projects will develop new and exciting techniques to tackle disease and have the potential to revolutionise the future of healthcare. The work will also capitalise on the excellent science available in this country and will help the UK to maintain its global position at the leading edge of biosciences and biotechnology. The awards are an example of how DTI is supporting the development of new technologies that enhance the future competitiveness of UK industry.
