Commission plans cancer strategy
The Commission is planning a European strategy on cancer research. This will include a list of common priorities for funding under Framework 6, the coordination of national research to avoid duplication and fragmentation, and a push for the harmonisation of legislation governing clinical trials.

MEPs push for stem cell concessions
MEPs are to press the Council of Ministers to bring forward a decision on the funding of stem cell research in Framework 6. At a meeting due to take place this week they will also ask for the regulatory committee proposed by the Council to be scrapped.




ESF poised to take control of Cost
Management of the Cost research cooperation initiative is likely to be taken on by the European Science Foundation. Cost senior officials met in Berlin two weeks ago, where a draft memorandum of understanding was finalised. Officially agreed on Monday, once ratified it will transfer management of the Cost initiative from the Commission to the ESF.

Aquaculture research funding must improve
The opportunities for financing research and technological development in aquaculture must be improved, according to a Commission plan presented to EU ministers this week. While some of this can be achieved through Framework 6, revising the EU financial instrument for fisheries guidance is also proposed as a way of increasing investment.

Schröder victory promises research policy stability
Germany's ruling Social Democrat/Green coalition scraped through Sunday's federal elections with a slender majority. This will mean a continuation of policies that emphasise innovation as a means of driving economic growth, with a prominent role given to research.
