Violence Prevention in School - New European Internet-Portal
September 24, 2002Violence in school, juvenile violence and bullying are topics that have been debated recently in many Western countries. Though not as dramatic as presented in the media, school violence and bullying has been rising constantly over the past decade. This has wide-ranging implications for our societies.
In most Western countries we have a growing number of approaches, materials, web sites, mailing lists etc. that focus on these topics. Indeed, at present the internet has an "oversupply" of information and advice about school bullying and violence. This often makes orientation difficult and sometimes discourages people to seek information or help online.
Within the European project VISIONARY - supported by the Socrates/Minerva action of the European Commission - institutes from Denmark, Finland, Germany, Portugal and the United Kingdom have created an International portal on violence in school. The VISIONARY portal mainly addresses teachers, pupils, parents and experts. It presents and structures information that can be found on the Internet and it facilitates relevant discussion and networking at a national and international level.
The site offers background information on violence in schools and its prevalence, link collections, news archives, discussion forums and mailing lists. All main sections of the site are available in each of the languages of the partner countries.
