Prime Minister to Welcome New Students of Peninsula Medical SchoolSeptember 23, 2002The first ever students of Peninsula Medical School will receive a welcome message from the Prime Minister on their first day on 30 September 2002. The Prime Minister Tony Blair, has sent a special message for the 130 new students of Peninsula Medical School when they join for their induction week this September. There were more than 700 applications for only 130 undergraduate places on the course. Students accepted onto the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree were selected on the basis of a demanding ethical interview designed to assess the important non-academic skills that a doctor should posses, such as communications, reflectiveness and empathy as well as assessment of their intellectual aptitude for the course. Peninsula Medical School was developed in response to a government initiative in 1998 which aimed to generate an extra 1,000 places in medical education. Peninsula has a unique approach to medical education which has been developed through partnership with the NHS in Devon and Cornwall and the universities of Plymouth and Exeter in line with the GMC's recommendations 'Tomorrow's Doctors'. The 30 September is a major milestone in the development of the Peninsula Medical School which is based in the South West of England and has facilities in Exeter, Plymouth, Barnstaple, Torbay and Truro. | |||||||||||||||||||||
