Chemistry & Industry Magazine - 16 September IssueSeptember 12, 2002NEWS Chemicals stakeholders must all talk and listen: CIA (page 4) Judith Hackitt, director general of the UK’s Chemical Industries Association (CIA), has used the annual UK Trades Union Congress meeting to call for greater trust between stakeholders and the UK chemicals industry, to ensure future growth. Media’s balanced science reports confuse public (page 5) Scientists must give a simple, consistent message if they want it to be heard and understood by the public, according to UK researchers. ‘What people learn from media is not details, taken from individual reports or programmes, it is from repetition based on simple associations’. Twins’ goodwill to help in search for difficult genes (page 6) Identical twins’ unique genetic similarities can help in the effort to track down hard-to-find genes. American researchers have used identical twins to help identify genes responsible for two different types of cleft lip. 900MHz NMR helps see protein–drug interactions (page 7) Previously unseen interactions between proteins and drugs can be studied using one of the world’s most powerful nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers. The 900MHz spectrometer will offer greater insight into chemical structures and interactions. NEWS FEATURE Fluoride: the magic ingredient? (page 8) Fluoride is added to our water, toothpaste, chewing gum as well as other products to protect our teeth. But in July 2002, Magda Aelvoet, Belgian minister for health announced a plan to ban the sale of chewing gum and tablets containing fluoride. Her reason was the possibility of nervous system damage, dental fluorosis or osteoporosis in people consuming excessive amounts of fluoride. Niamh Delaney reports on a potential ban. FEATURES - Drug Regulation Mice at the heart of drugs (pp13-14) Deltagen has developed a range of genetically modified mice, to help develop new drugs and research causes of genetically transmitted diseases. Simon Robinson talks to CEO Bill Matthews Risk versus benefit (page 16-18) Following the recent withdrawal of Baycol/Lipobay, and concerns raised by the links made to the deaths of 57 patients taking GSK’s smoking cessation therapy Zyban, drug vigilance is once again a priority. Stuart Curry reports on an essentially contested concept in pharmaceuticals regulation. Please acknowledge Chemistry & Industry as the source of these items.
