Hans Wigzell named America’s Swede of the YearSeptember 03, 2002Professor Hans Wigzell, rector of Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, and a world leader in immunology, has been chosen by the Swedish Council of America to receive the honorary title of America’s Swede of the Year. The honor will be conferred at the festivities in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Swedish Council in Seattle on September 28. Hans Wigzell assumed the rectorship of Karolinska Institutet in 1995. He has served as chair of both the Nobel Committee and the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet and is presently adviser to the Swedish government in research matters. Karolinska Institutet enjoys a worldwide reputation as a research institute and medical university, alongside its role as the institution that awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Hans Wigzell is being honored for his scientific achievements and for furthering the excellent reputation of the university. The Swedish Council of America, headquartered in Minneapolis, is an organization with nearly 300 member organizations under its umbrella. Since its foundation in 1972 the Swedish Council has developed into the most important organization in the US to preserve and disseminate the history of Swedish immigration to the US and, through its programs, to provide economic support and cooperation among its many local associations to stimulate a broad awareness of contemporary Sweden in the US. One of the auxiliary organizations of the Swedish Council is the Royal Round Table, whose members meet in Sweden every three years.
