Prostate disease and fear of GPsSeptember 02, 2002Men delay seeking help about symptoms of prostate disease because they believe GPs have negative attitudes toward them. Men also feel the available health information about prostate disease is `negative`. This is the finding of a study reported today, Friday 6 September 2002, at The British Psychological Society Division of Health Psychology Annual Conference at Sheffield Hallam University, by Susan Hale, Sara Willott and Sarah Grogan of the University of Stafford. In the study interviews were carried out with 20 men who had recently contacted their GP with symptoms of prostate disease and had been referred to a local urological unit. The men reported that the main reason they had been reluctant to seek medical help was their negative attitudes towards GPs and their perception that GPs had negative attitudes towards them. The men described much of the available information about prostate disease as 'too clinical' and lacking detail of 'how to cope with symptoms'. The men finally decided to go to their GPs when they thought their symptoms indicated a 'serious disease', and when other people became aware of the symptoms. In their presentation the authors discuss their findings in relation to information provision and the care and treatment of men with prostate disease. | |||||||||||||||||||||
