Chemistry & Industry Magazine - 16 August IssueAugust 14, 2002NEWS Brain’s grammar function separates us from apes (page 5) Until now there has been no comprehensive and scientific evidence to explain why monkeys and humans are so different, despite having a mere 1.23% difference in their genome but researchers in Japan have discovered that humans possess a grammar function whereas monkeys do not. It could be our talent for grammar that gives us the edge over the ape, providing us with a brain skill that makes us uniquely human. Aquatic drug cocktail hits food chain (page 6) Water treatment systems must be modernised to remove pharmaceutical waste that is destabilising the food chain and polluting the environment, says a Canadian researcher. Cocktails of pharmaceuticals such as Prozac and antibiotics excreted by humans are finding their way into water with dramatic effects on Daphnia, an important aquatic organism in the food chain. Lack of genetic diversity limits stem-cell line value (page 7) Private funding looks unlikely to help clear the log-jam in US stem-cell research, which an American Professor says will only benefit white people. These problems have arisen despite US President George Bush’s decision in August 2001 to allow government funding only on research with the 60 existing stem cell lines - all of which are from Caucasian, middle-class people ‘This means that for people trying to research genetic disorders such as Down’s syndrome or conditions affecting ethnic minorities, the existing lines are of limited use.’ Human organs age at different rates over time (page 9) New insight into the process of ageing and how to control it may be possible, after the discovery that some organs in the body age faster than others. A study at a US University has shown that the ageing process profoundly affects rat lungs, whereas the liver does not age as quickly. It may be possible to control this process once we understand it better,’ said one researcher. ‘If one could slow down the ageing process in organs where rhythms are affected by ageing, this might result in a healthier organism when older.’ FEATURES - The Future of Food The GMO conflict (pp13-16) While the area of land cultivated with genetically modified (GM) crops in the US has increased rapidly during the past few years, reaching 36m hectares in 2001, in Europe the only GM-crop grown is corn, and only 12 000 hectares of land were cultivated in 2001. European biotechnology expert Helena von Troil suggests the US-Europe trade dispute over genetically modified products is a cultural one.
