EBAC Accredits Europe's Largest Medical Congress
August 07, 2002
The European Board for Accreditation in Cardiology (EBAC) has accredited the upcoming Congress of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) with 18 Continuing Medical Education (CME) points, thus making the ESC Congress the largest accredited medical event in Europe. EBAC
EBAC was launched in September 2001 as the primary European authority for the accreditation of educational training events in cardiology. EBAC is the first authority of its nature in the field of cardiology as CME programmes and accreditation in Europe having previously been handled on a national level. Working in collaboration with the EACCME , EBAC aims to set common quality standards by working in collaboration with National Accreditation Authority and National Cardiac Societies.
ESC Congress
The ESC Congress is Europe's largest medical congress attracting as of last year figures over 18 000 participants worldwide. In its desire to validated the scientific content of the programme, and due to the forever increasing obligatory CME system in European countries, the organising committee of the ESC congress decided to apply the second year running for accreditation.
18 CME credits hours were awarded, making The ESC Annual Congress the largest accredited medical congress in Europe. The EACCME recommends that cardiologists earn a minimum of 250 CME credits over a period of 5 years consisting of at least 125 external CME credits and 125 internal CME credits. 50 external and 50 internal should be earned per year.
CME- Continuing Medical Education
CME is a widespread concept within the medical community. It is a moral obligation and often a legal obligation to enhance the clinical competence on a lifelong basis.
Prof. Heinz. Weber, Chairman of EBAC, President of the UEMS Cardiology section explains: "Medical knowledge in the field doubles about every 4 years. However, doctors only improve their total medical knowledge by 10% throughout their professional medical career."
Prof Weber continues " CME and CPD are not only an ethical obligation, but a necessity allowing cardiologists to treat cardiovascular diseases patients according to the most recent recommendations and strategies"
CME is still voluntary in most European Countries, although there is a growing trend within European Union members countries to set up mandatory CME system in all medical specialties.
EBAC encourages at present voluntary participation in CME and CPD programmes.
EBAC acts within the umbrella structure for CME in Europe the EACCME. EACCME was created in January 2000 in order to assure that the awarding of international CME credits remains transparent based on a common system. It delegates the procedures of awarding CME points to independent specialty boards such as EBAC, which accredits scientific programmes in Cardiology.
