Virtual European Recycling Centre
August 01, 2002Gaiker is the head of the Virtual European Recycling Centre. This project financed by the European Commission will receive the amount of 2 million euros for the next three years.
The main function of this project is to provide the required information to all European companies that are working in the area of recycling by using the newest information technologies that are available. VERC will try to be the intermediary, among others, between professionals and society, waste producers and recyclers and national and international institutions, until it becomes an essential entity in that sector.
The first actions of VERC will be the followings: to complete the list of those that work in the area of recycling, to create a database of each sector and to create an operating web. In the future, VERC will provide services of great added value to the recycling industry. The aim of this project is to improve competitiveness between European recycling companies by integrating R+D activities with the needs of each company.
In order to contribute to the reduction of waste, VERC will cover all recycling areas, specially, vehicles; electric and electronic equipments; construction and demolition of waste; pneumatics; plastics; and metals.
It is obvious the importance of this initiative. We just have to remember that the European Union produces 2,2 thousand million tons of agricultural waste per year (those wastes can be domestic or industrial). In addition, the European Community Regulation is going to oblige to recycle between 50 and 90 % of the waste produced.
The Virtual European Recycling Centre (VERC) is constituted by 17 members of 10 European member-states (research centres, universities, companies and associations). The technology centre Gaiker will be in charge of the secretariat.
