Research council status recommended for AHRB
The Arts and Humanities Research Board should become a research council, according to a review carried out for the government. The new council should be created by a royal charter and funded, like the existing research councils, through the Office of Science and Technology.

Science scores third spending review boost
The science budget is set to increase by 10 per cent a year over the next three years. There will also be money to pay for the full cost of research council projects and an increase in PhD stipends. However, universities have given a cautious response to the spending review announcements. While welcoming the increases for science and research, they expressed disappointment that there was little detail about what they would receive on a recurrent basis.

Sustainable agriculture R&D lacks direction
Investment in sustainable agriculture research is being undermined by a lack of coordinated planning among the major funders, according to a review commissioned by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. The review team is urging BBSRC to be "very proactive" in pursuing closer strategic links in this field with the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Natural Environment Research Council.

Wellcome plans new research schemes
The Wellcome Trust has outlined plans to spend an extra £280 million over five years at UK universities. This will include money for researchers at the beginning of their careers and new initiatives in knowledge transfer.

Research: the cheap alternative
An analysis article considers this month`s reports on foot and mouth disease, and the finding that a little investment in research would have saved the nation a great deal of expense.
