Government science strategy good, and must be followed up

Save British Science today praised the Government for its new Science Strategy, and warned that the problems of British Science are so deep that Ministers will need to follow through for years to come if the UK is to have the competitive economy it needs.

"It is very significant that three cabinet ministers turned up today, following on from the Prime Minister`s speech about science, and the Chancellor`s recent injection of new money," said Dr Peter Cotgreave, Director of SBS, "It shows that the Government has accepted the argument that science and engineering are crucial parts of British society and of the economy".

"British science could be on its way back. There is a clear determination to do something about recruiting and retaining the best researchers, and in using UK science and technology for wealth creation".

"But there are areas where the details are still a bit thin. For example, although Estelle Morris, the Education Secretary, said she wants to attract more good science teachers, the new Strategy says rather little about how this will be achieved.

"And we still do not know what is going to happen about financing university education. Without a good flow of young well-educated scientists, we will not be able to do the exiting new research that is being funded. Sadly, students are being put off at the moment because of the financing arrangements.

"A whole area that was not even mentioned this morning was how Government obtains and uses science in its policy-making. With rail safety and foot-and-mouth high on the current agenda, we need to realise that delivering good policies in many of these areas depends crucially on investing in research. Nothing in last week`s announcement about money, or today`s announcement about strategy can really give people confidence that this issue is being resolved.

"Hopefully, more details will emerge in the coming months that will start to make serious progress on solving these problems."
