Research stories from BBSRC's Annual ReportJuly 23, 2002BBSRC has published its Annual Report and Accounts for 2001/2002. The report includes the following science stories from research funded by BBSRC. The full report, including a funding summary by university, institute and scientific area (page 4/5), is available in full at: http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/about/annrep/Welcome.html
Scientists at the John Innes Centre have discovered that plants have a chemical "memory" gene similar to one found in fruit flies. The gene enables plants to "remember" that they have been exposed to a period of cold early in their growth by locking the activity of another gene into the "cold" position, even when the plant subsequently experiences warmer conditions. The research is helping advance understanding of vernalisation, the process by which some plants delay flowering until after experiencing a significant cold period. Farmers could one day have a new weapon in the war on weeds; intelligent vision-guided devices capable of seeking out and destroying weeds. Scientists at the Silsoe Research Institute are developing computer-based models that can recognise individual plants from a picture of a field full of crops. The research is helping improve understanding of the spread of secondary tumours and could be used in determining how much tissue should be removed from around tumours. The model also enables researchers to investigate questions about the role of individual signalling molecules in stimulating cell movement, migration and proliferation.
