Gold for the jubilee yearJuly 16, 2002The Queen's Golden Jubilee year has been suitably marked by two British students, who were awarded gold medals at the International Biology Olympiad, held in Latvia. Facing an international field of more than 150 individual competitors, four students from around the UK achieved the best result so far for a British team. David Wyatt (Winchester College) was ranked second in the world! Erica Thompson (Douglas Academy, Glasgow) came fifth and also collected a gold medal, while her team mates, Rahul Vohra (King Edward's School, Birmingham) and Timothy Riley (Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Blackburn) received a silver and bronze medal respectively. All four were winners of the British Biology Olympiad, held earlier this year. This tremendous result places the British team top in Europe, though Asia dominated the contest. It wasn't all work and no play though. The British students had a chance to meet, go on excursions, exchange ideas and party with students their age from all round the globe.
Norma Broadbridge MBE, British Biology Olympiad Chairman, commented, 'We should all be very proud of our British students who have fought off some stiff competition to bring home gold. In a year of celebrations, we couldn't have wished for a better result.' Institute of Biology | |||||||||||||||||||||
