Chemistry & Industry - 15 July IssueJuly 11, 2002NEWS Nicotine may be answer to growing organs (page 4) Nicotine may prove to be the only thing that can facilitate the growth of an organ intact in the body, according to research by scientists in the US. They have shown that, in very low doses, nicotine can stimulate blood-vessel growth in damaged, blood-starved tissue, as well as recruit and immobilise hibernating adult stem cells to replace dead and damaged tissue. Cow’s urine ups drugs’ potency (page 6) A US patent for the use of cows’ urine as a bio-enhancer has been granted to scientists in India. The scientists plan to use a distillate of cows’ urine in combination with drugs to improve their potency, thereby reducing the amounts of a drug that have to be used. Men who lose sleep risk disease (page 7)
If men could only sleep like women, they might live longer. Researcher Alexandros Vgontzas, of Pennsylvania State University, thinks that better sleep might be one of the reasons why women have a life expectancy that is, on average, seven years longer than that of men. FEATURES - Options for Chemistry Graduates What career options? (pages 14-15) Chemistry is the enabling science; graduates are flexible, thorough and logical — so there are perhaps more options open to them than other graduates. UK scientific recruitment company, SRG, offer an insight into the available career options. Graduate Recruitment (pages 16-18) Mark Whitfield reports on the success of London’s graduate recruitment fair, and why students are so focused despite the realm of choices. Recruitment Consulting (page 20) C&I explores the role of the recruitment consultant in today’s chemical industry. Society of Chemical Industry | |||||||||||||||||||||
