Research Fortnight 10 July issue: stories on arts and humanities infrastructure, third stream metrics, the NW science strategy, the RAE and PPARC.July 10, 2002Universities need £500m for arts and humanities Infrastructure for arts and humanities research needs around £500 million to address years of under-investment according to a report to be published today. It calls for the money to be provided by government, allocated by formula rather than competition, as part of an overall package for university infrastructure. The conclusions appear in a report commissioned by the Higher Education Funding Council for England looking into the infrastructure needs of universities across the UK. Russell Group considers third stream metrics A set of indicators for measuring third stream work at universities and a system for allocating funds for these activities have been proposed to the Russell Group of research-intensive universities. The emphasis is on formula allocation, rather than the competition typical of third stream funds such as the Higher Education Innovation Fund. Science strategy proposed for NW England
The Northwest Science Council is consulting on a draft science strategy it has drawn up to develop the English region's science base. Spanning the next 20 years, the draft strategy focuses on biotechnology, environmental technologies, aerospace, chemicals and nuclear energy, considered the most important science-related business clusters in the region. No evidence for RAE criticism, says HEFCE The Higher Education Funding Council for England has expressed disappointment at the conclusions of a recent inquiry into the Research Assessment Exercise by the House of Commons science committee. It says that much of the committee's report was based on assertion and anecdote without supporting evidence. PPARC considers increase in PhDs The Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council is considering plans to increase the number of PhD students it trains by 50 per cent over the next few years. It also wants to increase its activities in exploiting the research that falls under its remit. Research Fortnight Ltd | |||||||||||||||||||||
