Well over half a million UK elderly have poor eyesight

Well over half a million elderly people in the UK have poor eyesight, shows research in the British Journal of Ophthalmology. The level of impairment rises sharply with age, and most of those affected are women, the study shows.

The findings were based on eyesight tests and information from blindness registries from 14600 elderly people taken from 53 family doctor practices across the UK. All those participating in the study were aged 75 and over.

Overall, more than one in 10 was visually impaired, and 2 per cent were blind according to World Health Organisation criteria. Almost one in five had sufficiently poor eyesight that they would not be able to drive. This rose to almost half of those aged over 90.

The prevalence of visual impairment among those aged 75 to 79 was over 6 per cent. But more than one in three of those in their 90s fell into this category. And almost 7 per cent of those aged 90+ were blind. Women were 43 per cent more likely to be visually impaired than men.

Using population data, the authors estimate that there are some 600 000 elderly people who are visually impaired, of whom over 150 000 are aged 90+. Almost three out of four are women.

The authors say they used a relatively conservative measure of impaired eyesight. Using the US definition would have increased the age specific estimates by 60 per cent, they say.
