Experts support call for new focus on soil management

Professor Mark Kibblewhite, Director of the recently launched National Soil Resources Institute, today strongly supported calls by the Environment Agency for a new focus on environmentally-friendly soil management practices. This comes after publication by the Agency of a report on Agriculture and Natural Resource Problems.

NSRI is a department on Cranfield University’s Silsoe campus, and a research leader in the field of soil management. Previous work by staff of the Institute has highlighted the extent of soil erosion, one of the costly problems identified in the Environment Agency report. In the late 1990s, NSRI calculated annual losses of 2.2 million tonnes of soil from arable land in England and Wales after completing the most comprehensive national survey of soil erosion ever carried out. Over the three years of the study, erosion was identified on 17% of arable fields visited. The study, funded by the then Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, also identified erosion in the uplands and from grassland soils.

More recently, work for the Environment Agency has highlighted the potential for loss of soil structure in agricultural soils to exacerbate the sorts of floods experienced in the winter of 2000. “Rapid run-off of rainfall from fields is very closely linked to erosion and sediment transport” said Professor Kibblewhite.

NSRI supports the broadening of current agri-environment schemes to include measures that address the sustainable management of soils on farmland. They have called for farm-wide audits of the state of soils and the generation of soil-specific farm management plans to reduce impact on the environment as part of any such scheme.
