Media Invite - From Research to Industry - PPARC`s North West Industry Workshop

Thursday 20th June - CCLRC Daresbury Laboratory, Warrington
Journalists are invited to attend this event which brings together academics from the world of particle physics and astronomy and industrialists. Several North West companies have already spun out of research funded by the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC) and others collaborate with research groups to develop new products and enhance business performance.
This event provides an opportunity to see how technology originally developed for research is being transferred into business applications across many different sectors including:- radio frequency engineering, sensor technology and large scale data handling.
Presentations will be given from scientists working in Universities across the north-west and will include:
* Grid technology and E-commerce - Dr Themis Bowcock, University of Liverpool
* E-Science: bringing together simulation, experiment and data - Professor Paul Durham, CCLRC Daresbury Laboratory
* Artificial Neural Networks and Cancer Management - Professor Robin Marshall, University of Manchester
* Semiconductor Sensors in High Energy Physics - Dr Tim Greenshaw, University of Liverpool Applications of Microwave and Radio-Frequency Power - Professor Richard Carter, Lancaster University
* Present and future technology at Jodrell Bank - Professor Peter Wilkinson, Jodrell Bank Observatory, University of Manchester
The keynote speech will be given by Professor Richard Clegg, Director of Science, BNFL and member of the North West Science Council.
The North West Industry Workshop is being organised by PPARC, with the support of the North West Science Council, the North West Universities Association, the North West Node and the CCLRC Daresbury Laboratory.
The Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council invests over £200m each year in research and development to support our core science areas, particle physics, astronomy and space science. These disciplines have immense implications for industry. Indeed, the world wide web, MRI and PET scanning in hospitals, financial services derivative and exotic option modelling, location systems for mobile phones are examples of how industry has made effective use of PPARC technologies in new markets.
