Essex environmentalist to shape the future of world agriculture
June 12, 2002A University of Essex academic has been nominated to join an international working party committed to agricultural research as well as becoming the Chief Editor of a new journal that will provide a critical forum for the latest research and thinking on agricultural sustainability.
Professor Jules Pretty, of the Centre for Environment and Society, has been nominated to join a Working Group charged with developing plans for an international Science Council for the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
The CGIAR is an association of public and private members supporting a system of 16 Future Harvest Centres that work in more than 100 countries to mobilize cutting-edge science to reduce hunger and poverty, improve human nutrition and health, and protect the environment. It has over 8,500 scientists conducting research worldwide and the knowledge generated by its staff pays enormous dividends for poor farmers across the globe.
Professor Pretty and his colleagues on the Working Group, including international experts on the science of agriculture, will be responsible for preparing a detailed proposal on the establishment of an international Science Council which will help to guide the future of world agriculture.
Professor Pretty said: `This is especially good news for the University of Essex as it is an opportunity to help shape a new international Science Council that will address the future of world agriculture.`
To add to Professor Pretty`s success is his recent appointment as Chief Editor of the new International Journal of Agricultural Sustainability (IJAS) which will be dedicated to advancing the understanding of sustainability in world agriculture.
The IJAS will publish both theoretical developments and critical appraisals of new evidence, regarding the agricultural sustainability of current and past systems, as well as transitions towards agricultural and rural sustainability at farm, community, regional, national and international levels.
Professor Pretty will work alongside Essex colleagues Dr Andrew Ball and Dr James Morison who are two of the four Associate Editors of the IJAS.
