Press invitation: International Conference to debate the ethics and politics of hospitality and social exclusion

How is class represented in societies whose national boundaries and cultural diversities are shifted and transformed by global movements of capital and people? How far is hospitality to `outsiders` - strangers, migrants, asylum seeker or refugees - governed by the social class of the host community? How does the status of the outsider affect their treatment?

Internationally renowned writers, artists and academics will debate these issues at the conference `Translating Class, Altering Hospitality`, which takes place on 21-23 June 2002 at Leeds Town Hall , UK, organised by the AHRB Centre for Cultural Analysis, Theory and History (CentreCATH), University of Leeds with support form Leeds City Council.

The conference aims to develop a cultural analysis of the issues of citizenship, social exclusion, xenophobia and racism using a transdisciplinary approach to understanding historical and contemporary crises and changes, and by examining subjective dimensions of relations between social others and globally redistributed people, cultures and pressures.

CongressCATH will draw social theorists and political philosophers into dialogue with cultural historians and analysts working in art, art history and cultural studies. This will generate a range of research and debate on the ethics and politics of hospitality - the unconditional invitation to the stranger - in relation to the continuing grievances of social estrangement and dispossession.

A focal point of the congress will be the collaboration with Leeds City Council`s Leisure Services and Arts Regeneration Unit to forge links and exchanges with cultural initiatives in the city and region that emerge from and contribute to the issues of class and intercommunal relations in contemporary British society. Speakers at the academic congress will meet and work with local community groups to bridge academic debate and social and cultural practices that share a concern with issues of class and hospitality.
