Psychological Debriefing

The British Psychological Society today published a document, looking at the issues surrounding psychological debriefing following a crisis or disaster.

The document, Psychological Debriefing, has been produced by a Working Party of the Society's Professional Practice Board. It is aimed at psychologists, involved in counselling and debriefing those affected by personal, community or national crises. The report is a balanced examination of the differing opinions and evidence on an issue that has often proved controversial over the last ten years.

The report starts by looking at psychological debriefing as a method of crisis intervention. Current research, and it's associated problems, is examined, as is the need for correct training, supervision and assessment of debriefers. Further sections examine the legal and cultural issues surrounding psychological debriefing, the specific problems involved in debriefing children, and the use of psychological debriefing by organisations, seeking to develop a trauma care programme.

Noreen Tehrani, the Working Party's co-ordinator, said,

"Although this project was sponsored by the British Psychological Society and psychologists from most of the psychological disciplines took part, we also involved trauma victims, psychological debriefers, counsellors and organisations using debriefing.

Part of the working party's brief was to look at the current evaluative studies. Some of the most widely publicized studies were found to be seriously flawed, leading to the working party's call for new research methods that were suited to the complex situations relating to disasters.

If psychological debriefing is to be successful it has to be undertaken by competent practitioners, within an appropriate setting and with adequate supervision and support. It is hoped that the BPS will work with other interested groups to facilitate this process."
