General Prize Shortlist Announced - Aventis Prizes for Science Books 2002May 24, 2002Schizophrenia, dust, scientific rivalry and life among the baboons of Africa are among the subjects covered in the shortlist for the General Prize of the Aventis Prizes for Science Books 2002. The shortlist for the General Prize, selected from 83 entries submitted this year, is: AEONS THE UNIVERSE IN A NUTSHELL THE SECRET LIFE OF DUST THE MADNESS OF ADAM & EVE RIVALS The judging panel for the General Prize is chaired by Dr Raj Persaud (Consultant Psychiatrist and Senior Lecturer at the Maudsley Hospital); Clive Cookson (Science Editor, The Financial Times); The Rt Reverend Dr Peter Forster (Bishop of Chester); Dr Janna Levin (Author and Advanced Fellow in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at Cambridge University) and Dr Robin Lovell-Badge (Head of the Division of Developmental Genetics at the MRC National Institute for Medical Research). They will meet on June 25, 2002 to decide the winner. The winner will be announced at a gala awards dinner for the Junior and General Prizes at the Science Museum, London on Tuesday, 25 June 2002. Each prize is worth £10,000 to the winning authors and £1,000 to each of the other shortlisted authors. The Prizes, now in their 14th year, aim to encourage the writing, publishing and reading of good and accessible popular science books.
