UNIVERSITY SPIDER MAN CHARTS REGION`S SPECIES
May 16, 2002A University of Plymouth lecturer has helped to compile a two-volume atlas detailing the biology, habitat and conservation of over 600 species of British spider.
Peter Smithers of the Department of Biological Sciences has spent the last 20 years gathering information in Devon and Cornwall as part of the nationwide project, which was initiated in the mid-70s by the British Arachnological Society and the Centre of Hydrology and Ecology`s Biological Records Centre.
Experts around the UK were asked to organise local survey teams to collect data for The Atlas of British Spiders, which is the largest and most comprehensive work of its kind, and provides maps of where in the British Isles each species is found. Peter, with the valued assistance of Ivor Kenny, his right hand man, organised numerous field trips in the region, which were attended by local entomologists and natural historians, both expert and amateur.
With the help of the University`s Department of Biological Sciences, who supported the project by providing equipment and allowing them to use its laboratories, the south-west team identified tens of thousands of spiders from hundreds of different locations.
"It is brilliant to see the huge amount of work that has gone into this project finally come into fruition," said Peter. "It is the first comprehensive account of the British spider fauna to be produced for over 100 years and will be an enormous asset to biologists and conservationists alike."
