May 16, 2002During May 2002 the British Council's Culturelab-uk.com forum gives users the chance to pitch their own questions to revolutionary computer games developer, Peter Molyneux, whose company Lionhead forged a whole new gaming territory with its game Black And White. This special edition of Culture Lab, devoted to gaming, features an exclusive interview between Molyneux and Steven Poole, author of Trigger Happy: The Inner Life of Videogames. Black and White has been hailed as the most sophisticated application of artificial intelligence yet seen in computer games. Among many fascinating revelations, Molyneux talks to Poole about the next step in his AI gaming revolution, a work with the enigmatic title Project Ego.
In a market that is increasingly flooded by games, Peter Molyneux's passion, futurism and scientific ambition command respect from the notoriously sceptical world of 'gamers.' Consider his response to the idea of a direct interface between a computer and the human brain and it is easy to see why he is a guru for gamers. 'If that happens, I would be first in the queue. Even if you said to me, "There`s a one in 10 chance that you`ll end up a vegetable at the end of this", I`d still take it. Because being able to roam around a world that I created, to touch the virtual leaf on the virtual tree in an environment that I was part of designing, would be the ultimate entertainment'.
