Scientist issues warning over UK's coastal development

A scientist at Royal Holloway, University of London has condemned some of the recent developments on the coastline of south-east England as inappropriate in terms of medium and long term coastal management, largely due to their location on a examples of unstable coastline.

Dr Peter French, an expert on coastal erosion in the Department of Geography, says the developments are at odds with the latest thinking on coastal management. In the face of rising sea levels, when the North Sea and the Atlantic are getting rougher and our coasts are threatened by accelerating erosion, he believes that such developments are bound to experience problems in the future.

He says: "It`s extraordinary that some recent developments have been allowed to go ahead in the full knowledge that they will require millions of pounds of public money to protect them from the sea in years to come."

In contrast, Dr French points to new approaches to coastal management, such as beach feeding at Folkestone and Bournemouth, and `doing nothing` at Birling Gap, as examples of best practice along the south coast. Such `soft` engineering involves protecting the coast by working with natural processes, in effect, trying to mimic nature.

Dr French says: "Healthy beaches, allowed to function naturally, stop wave energy. Erosion, however, is a symptom of instability. When the coast becomes stable, the erosion will stop naturally. If you stop erosion artificially, you stop the input of sediment to the beach, and that beach functioning as a natural system. This has a knock-on effect, depriving other beaches of their sediment supply -causing erosion problems elsewhere.

"The problem with some recent developments is that they will need defences in the near future. And we know that this creates problems both at the point where the defences are built and in the wider coastal region."
