Dominique Lecourt appointed chairman of the Professional Conduct and Ethics Advisory Committee of the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD)
May 14, 2002Dominique Lecourt has held office in many responsible capacities in education and research in his field, the philosophy of science. He was commissioned in 1999 by the Minister for Education Claude Alle'gre with the task of incorporating this discipline in all higher scientific and medical curricula and in the Grandes Ecoles. He has taught in Central and Latin America as visiting professor, at the University of Mexico (summer schools, 1980-87), at the University of Buenos Aires and recently at the University of Medellin. He has toured widely giving many lectures in the Middle East and Africa. Between 1993 and 1998, he was a member of the CNRS Operational Ethics Committee for the Life Sciences. Since 1999 he has been a member of the Scientific Committee of Scientific and Technical Culture and Museums Committee of the Ministry of Education.
His career is studded with numerous administrative responsibilities : technical adviser to the Minister for Education (1984-85), a regional director of education and director of the National Distance Learning Centre (CNED, 1986-88), a member since 1994 of the Board of Governors of the Centres for Living Matter Research of the University of Paris 7 - Denis Diderot. In addition, he has been general representative of the French Academy of Sciences' Biovision Foundation since 2001.
Dominique Lecourt has many books to his name and is chairman of the supervisory committee of the publishers Presses universitaires de France (PUF). Among his latest publications can be mentioned Contre la peur (1990, new edition: Quadrige/PUF, 1999), the Dictionnaire d'histoire et philosophie des sciences (PUF, 1999) which received a prize from the Institut de France and the paperback on the philosophy of science in the " Que sais je ? " series, La philosophie des sciences (PUF, 2001). He has also published a variety of collective works, especially on bioethics, human cloning, myths and religions.
The Professional Conduct and Ethics Advisory Committee of the IRD was set up in 2001. Its purpose is to contribute to the implementation and further elaboration rules of professional ethics governing research and work of all kinds performed in the context of the IRD. It also has the task of drawing up and continually updating a guide of good practice. The Committee also studies ethical questions raised by schemes of scientific aid for development between industrial countries and the countries of the South.
