Brains of Britain
May 08, 2002Two young people are set to represent Britain in, not one school science Olympiad, but two! This is equivalent to an international athlete running in the hundred metres and then throwing the javelin.
Erica Thompson, from the Douglas Academy in Glasgow and David Wyatt from Winchester College are representing their country at the International Olympiads in both physics and biology. They form part of two teams who have already won national competitions in each subject. Their young brains will be stretched over the two events in July as they compete with representatives from all over the world.
Dr Cyril Isenberg, who has been organising the British physics competitions since 1984 comments, "We have won many medals over the years at the IPhOs. In both 1988 and 1990 British students were placed first in the world. Our team members often have a broad appreciation of both the sciences and the arts. They are our future scientific leaders."
