Two young people are set to represent Britain in, not one school science Olympiad, but two! This is equivalent to an international athlete running in the hundred metres and then throwing the javelin.

Erica Thompson, from the Douglas Academy in Glasgow and David Wyatt from Winchester College are representing their country at the International Olympiads in both physics and biology. They form part of two teams who have already won national competitions in each subject. Their young brains will be stretched over the two events in July as they compete with representatives from all over the world.

Norma Broadbridge MBE, Chair of the British Biology Olympiad, said, "This is the first time that a student has represented Britain in International Olympiads for both these subjects. The two science subjects contain very different material and Erica and David face a real challenge to compete at an international level in both subjects. However, they are amazing people and ready for the challenge - as well as the rewards - of meeting and competing with their peers from around the world."

Dr Cyril Isenberg, who has been organising the British physics competitions since 1984 comments, "We have won many medals over the years at the IPhOs. In both 1988 and 1990 British students were placed first in the world. Our team members often have a broad appreciation of both the sciences and the arts. They are our future scientific leaders."
