Chemistry & Industry - 6 May IssueMay 01, 2002NEWS Cancer vaccine from patient’s own blood (page 4) A novel cancer vaccine made from patient’s own blood is in clinical trials in the US. In phase II clinical trials, a 60% reduction in median-tumour growth was observed and, in some cases, tumours stopped growing altogether. Spring may provide answer to permanent female birth control (page 6) For the first time, a tiny spring-like device could provide the means for simple, painless and permanent female contraception without surgery. Currently the only method of permanent contraception available to women is laparscopic tubal ligation — having their fallopian tubes tied. Eye zapper for hyperopia (page 7) Forget glasses. A quick zap with a radio-frequency pen can sort out those dodgy eyes. At least if you are far-sighted. And it is hoped that the same device will also cure astigmatism. The procedure, which is expected to be available by mid-summer, takes less than three minutes and is completely painless NEWS FEATURE The end of the blockbuster? (page 9) For the past decade, large pharmaceutical companies have concentrated on finding and promoting blockbuster drugs; the big name drugs with sales of more than $1bn/year. Richard Butler reports how the years of big pharma getting fat on the proceeds of a handful of big name drugs could be coming to an end. FEATURES Process Control (pages 13-17) Process optimisation is deceptively simple, improve processes and operate at close to optimum conditions for prolonged periods to improve profits and return on investments. Simon Robinson looks at how some companies make a living helping others to enhance their productivity. Data Management (pages 18-21) Despite the recent economic downturn, chemical companies are investing increasing sums of money in R&D, and productivity and efficiency remain crucial to commercial success.
