University of Ulster Announces £12m+ Venture Capital

The University of Ulster is to launch a £12m+ Venture Capital Fund to help commercialise the products of its research programmes.

To be known as the Alpha Fund, the development is the first fund of its kind in Ireland or the UK, and will channel venture capital finance sourced in the USA toward `spin out` and `spin in` companies working with the University in Northern Ireland.

The fund will focus primarily on first stage investment financing for biotechnology spin outs, according to Professor John Hughes, the University of Ulster`s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Development.

The new fund will be independently managed for the University, and will be given first right of refusal on any projected commercialization of UU research. It will also be able to invest in `spin-in` companies, said the Professor.

"This is financing model which has achieved great success in the USA," said Professor Hughes, "and we are delighted to be pioneering it in Northern Ireland.

"We decided to create this fund because there is a dearth of venture capital funding available to enterprises in Northern Ireland.

"Investment Northern Ireland, which recently launched its Corporate Plan, identified this absence as a major problem which needs to be addressed rapidly.

"Here at the University of Ulster, we`re serious about our spin-out policy, and are moving to make sure that all the organizational structures and financial tools necessary to take our research from the laboratory to the marketplace are in position"
