Wiley InterScience Launches the Encyclopedia of Computational Chemistry

Computational Chemists Can Now Access Essential Reference Work Online

Chichester, April 15 2002 - Gregory St. John, Vice President and General Manager, Wiley InterScience, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., today announced the addition of the Encyclopedia of Computational Chemistry to Wiley InterScience's growing selection of quality electronic Major Reference Works on line.

"The Encyclopedia of Computational Chemistry is a foundational work in this relatively young and rapidly evolving field," said Mr. Mike Davis, STM Publishing Director, Vice President, John Wiley & Sons Ltd. "Comprising 5 volumes, and equivalent to over 3,500 print pages, the online version of the work now provides computational chemists with unmatched breadth of content together with a dynamic and flexible format, perfectly suited to their progressive discipline," said Mr. Davis.

Setting the standards in computational chemistry, the Encyclopedia contains over 300 primary articles together with a further 375 definition articles covering all aspects of the field, from ab initio computations to biological and biochemical applications. With editors who define the field, Paul von Rague Schleyer, Peter R Schreiner, Henry F. Schafer III, William L. Jorgensen and Walter Thiel, the Encyclopedia contains contributions from more than 300 leading computational chemists. The online version provides fully searchable text, hyper-linked cross-references, and over 300 full color illustrations.

"The online environment is a natural location for a reference work of this type and magnitude," continued Mr. St. John. "Here it becomes a powerful and convenient research tool that is delivered directly to these chemists' own work environment, allowing them to move with desktop ease between their own research computations and the methods and applications detailed in this essential reference work."

The Encyclopedia of Computational Chemistry also forms part of Wiley InterScience's fully searchable and browseable database that integrates the complete content of its other major reference works with that of its online journals and books. "This means," says Mr. St. John, "that a computational chemist can simultaneously search the Encyclopedia of Computational Chemistry, together with Wiley InterScience`s extensive collection of chemistry journals, online books and a variety of other reference sources-including the Angewande Chemie, The Chemical Record, Journal of Computational Chemistry and the International Journal of Quantum Chemistry, Reviews in Computational Chemistry and the Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology. This delivers a huge amount of tailored information in one convenient package."

The addition of the Encyclopedia of Computational Chemistry to the Wiley InterScience service brings the number of Major Reference Works online to 25. This represents over 110,000 print pages, or 158 volumes of work, which together would take up around 10 meters of traditional shelf space.
