Boys abused at school likely to suffer persistent health problems

Boys sexually abused at school are three times as likely to suffer persistent health problems as other boys, finds new research in the Archives of Disease in Childhood.

The study shows that while the type and frequency of reported health problems were similar in boys who had and had not been sexually abused, the length of time they took to resolve was significantly different.

The researchers looked at the health records of 93 boys, six years after they had been sexually abused by the same schoolteacher. Most of the boys had been aged between 8 and 10 at the time and had endured varying forms of abuse, from fondling over clothes, to oral sex and mutual masturbation.

Their health records were compared with those of 93 boys in a neighbouring school who had not been abused.

There was no evidence that the abused boys used health services any more frequently than the comparison group, and the types of problems were also similar in both groups. But there was a significant difference in the number of general practitioner consultations for the same psychological problem or unexplained illness with no obvious physical cause (somatic problem).

The abused boys were almost twice as likely to need between two and four consultations and between five and nine consultations for the same problem as boys in the comparison group.

Three quarters of the boys who had not been sexually abused took one month or less to get better, compared with half of the abused boys. There was a significantly higher proportion of abused boys who had problems lasting 4 months or more. Problems lasting longer than a year were three times as common among the abused boys, with almost 30 per cent of them falling into this category.

The authors conclude that sexual abuse is under reported, particularly among boys, and note that until relatively recently the prevailing view was that sexual abuse of boys was rare and had little impact on their subsequent development.
