UK Princess sees oldest ice on earth
February 08, 2002Princess Anne, currently visiting Antarctica, was today given a gift of ice that is 50000 years old. It came from an ice core - a cylinder of ice drilled from the Antarctic ice sheet - drilled by the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA). EPICA, a consortium of 10 European nations, is drilling two ice cores in Antarctica, in order to improve our understanding of climate change. At the site of Dome C, the season of drilling has just ended at a depth of 2870 metres. The Princess was given the ice at the Italian Antarctic station of Terra Nova Bay.
The Chief Scientist for EPICA at Dome C, Dr Eric Wolff of the British Antarctic Survey, told the Princess: "At the current depth of 2870 metres, our preliminary results tell us that the ice is just over half a million years old. That makes it the oldest ice ever seen by modern man." The Chief Driller, Laurent Augustin, of the Laboratoire de Glaciologie in Grenoble, confirmed that the team intend to return next year to drill to the bedrock at about 3250 metres. "We expect to understand how climate has changed over this long period, and why - that will allow us to improve the computer models that predict how the earth will react to future warming", said Dr Wolff.
