PRESS CONFERENCE - Presentation of the UnivERsol project to promote the development of photovoltaic energy in Europe

January 10, 2002

On Monday 14th January at the Barcelona Science Park, a press conference will be held to mark the public presentation of the "UnivERsol" project (Universities, Renewable Energies, solar), which is co-financed by the Directorate General for Transport and Energy (DGTREN) of the European Commission. This project aims to promote the use of solar photovoltaic systems to generate electricity. Large photovoltaic electricity generators will be installed in 25 university buildings or cultural centres in Great Britain, France, the Netherlands and Spain, thereby promoting the development of "green campuses" and "green municipalities", the forerunners of sustainable cities. In the framework of this project, the University of Barcelona will construct one of the largest generators of the project. This will be the most powerful generator ever installed in a single building in the city of Barcelona.

Managed by the University of Barcelona and coordinated by Antoni Lloret, professor of the Department of Applied Physics and Optics, with the collaboration of the Catalan Institute of Energy of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia, this project counts on the participation of 29 European institutions. The project design has been drawn up by the Euroregional Photovoltaic Systems Group (GESP), located in the Barcelona Science Park.

This project aims to increase awareness of students and European society as a whole in order to further the mass use of this technology. The installations also constitute a research tool with which to perfect the technology, which, apart from affecting energetic aspects, also influences architecture and urban design.
