Building an Olympiad

The recent New Year Honours list featured a remarkable woman, who provided the driving force needed to enter Britain into international competition. Norma Broadbridge, MBE FIBiol provided the energy and sheer hard work that was required to establish the UK in a previously untried arena.

Science olympiads have almost 50 years' experience of encouraging and rewarding excellence and initiating international links in further education. The International Biology Olympiad is entering its 13th year and this will be the seventh year that Britain has entered a team. Without Norma Broadbridge and the Institute of Biology, Britain's participation would not be possible.

Each year the competition grows. The IBO had 38 countries entering teams in 2001, and the British Biology Olympiad had 1263 individual entrants. Alan Malcolm, Chief Executive of the Institute of Biology, said, 'Norma Broadbridge is a singularly deserving recipient of an MBE and the Institute was very proud to hear of her recognition. The British Biology Olympiad not only celebrates achievement, it also encourages participating pupils and schools to excel and provides a network of contacts to help.'
