Watersports are a breeding nuisance

More than one-third of the UK’s wetlands is suffering high levels of disturbance, according to a new study by the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT). Speaking at the British Ecological Society’s Winter Meeting, to be held at the University of Warwick on 18–20 December 2001, Dr James Robinson of the WWT will warn that the impact of this disturbance on waterbirds is as serious as loss of habitat. “If waterbirds can’t find alternative sites during periods of high disturbance, it could affect their future survival,” Dr Robinson says.

Although only a quarter of recorded disturbances was due to human activities – including microlights, jet skiing and shooting – waterbirds take much longer to recover from human compared with other sources of disturbance. According to Dr Robinson: “Human disturbance can prevent waterbirds from gaining access to food supplies, roosting areas and breeding sites. Disturbance, especially by recreational activities, is a threat to waterbirds, particularly as many recreational activities are increasing in intensity and distribution.”

The Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS) is the first national survey of the scale and sources of disturbance to waterbirds in the UK. Counts were made annually for the past four years at 2,000 wetland sites from as far afield as Shetland, Jersey, Pembrokeshire and East Anglia.

The survey’s findings will be used to improve monitoring of disturbance to waterbirds. Dr Robinson says: “The results will allow us to monitor national trends, identify sites with potentially high levels of disturbance, and initiate more detailed research on the long-term effects on waterbirds which may be of conservation concern.”

Dr Robinson will present his full findings at 15.20 on Wednesday 19 December 2001.
