Families and the effects they have on long term romantic relationships, grieving and the way we deal with difficulties were discussed at the meeting of The British Psychological Society, South West Branch, held at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro, Cornwall today Saturday 1 December. The speakers were Dr Janet Reibstein, Dr Tony Carr and Dr Rudi Dallos.

Janet Reibstein is a Lecturer at Exeter University specialising in families and couples. She proposed that current research suggests therapeutic work with couples has not shown notable success. The factors necessary for sustaining enriching long term relationships were discussed. Using work on 'successful' partnerships, ways of improving therapeutic practices and outcomes were examined.

Tony Carr is Head of Clinical Psychology at the University of Plymouth and Honorary Director of Plymouth and South Hams Bereavement Service. He explored family factors and processes affecting our response to bereavement and grief 'gone wrong'. Using his own research, other published work and recent clinical examples he examined the importance and influence of relationship and role, love and anger, child abuse, need and dependence in our response to grief.

Rudi Dallos is a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Psychology at the University of Plymouth and Consultant Clinical Psychologist with adolescents in Somerset. He explored how early experiences of being emotionally taken care of within our families affect our abilities to feel secure and to understand our own and others feelings. Using examples of clinical work with young offenders and young people with eating disorders he argued this has implications for how we deal with difficulties, especially relationships.
