American manufacturers aim for inexpensive quality; Germans prefer focus on technologies and flexibility
November 15, 2001
Equality initiative continues in FP6 New measures on research and gender will be implemented in Framework 6. These will include research into the issues of gender inequality in science and mechanisms to address the problems identified. The measures were announced last week by the EU's director general for research, Achilleas Mitsos, at a conference on gender and research. "I can't give you an exact time-scale for the work," Mitsos told Research Europe, "but we can do it in Framework 6." The initiatives will be drawn together in an action plan which will considered by EU ministers on 12 December. Ministers agree to mix mechanisms in FP6 EU research ministers meeting in Luxembourg on 30 October struck a deal to continue the use of existing Framework 5 funding mechanisms alongside the new instruments being proposed by the European Commission to implement Framework 6. Up until last week's meeting, the United Kingdom and France have been the only EU member states fully supportive of entirely replacing Framework 5's shared-cost projects.
Cern unlikely to get more money for LHC Cern is unlikely to get extra contributions from its member states to cover the budget over-runs for the Large Hadron Collider. At a meeting of Cern's finance committee last week, France, Germany and the UK all ruled out extra funding and said that the over-run would have to be covered from Cern's current budget.
Auditors ponder mobility shortcomings An audit of the training and mobility programme in Framework 4 has found that, on average, contractors and beneficiaries of the awards were satisfied with the service they received from the Commission. However the European Court of Auditors still has some concerns about how the programme was administered.
Denmark advised to reform research administration A complete overhaul of Denmark's science infrastructure has been recommended by the Danish Research Commission. The commission was set up by Birte Weiss, minister for research and information technology, in May 2000 to evaluate the Danish research system. Its newly published report suggests merging the functions of the six existing research councils, the National Research Foundation and the Danish Research Training Council into one organisation.
