New solutions to an age-old problem

November 02, 2001

Unique gathering of UK scientists, policy makers and leading figures in ageing research

No one welcomes the physical effects of getting older yet we all want to live a long and active life.

On November 12th the UK National Collaboration on Ageing Research will be launched in Birmingham.

This new partnership is between four of the UK's Research Councils BBSRC, EPSRC, ESRC and MRC. This is the first ever collaboration between Research Councils on ageing research. This event will highlight latest work in the UK and abroad in this diverse field. Its aim is to promote a joint working approach and to identify priority research areas for the future.

Projects that are already underway include:

experiments on worms that are already providing insight into the genetic basis of the ageing process

designing better living environments for people with dementia

research on homelessness in old age resulting in new policies for older people that have improved their life chances

the setting up of intermediate care services to help older people regain their independence after a stroke or major surgery

This is also a unique opportunity for journalists to talk directly to some of those involved in a research area that is significant for all of us. Health Minister Lord Hunt will be giving the opening address at the launch. According to the Office of National Statistics the number of people over pensionable age, taking account of the change in womens retirement age, is projected to increase from 10.7 million in 1998 to 11.9 million in 2011, and will rise to 12.2 million by 2021.

Outlining the significance of this collaboration The Director of the UK National Collaboration on Ageing Research Professor Alan Walker, said, "This is a unique partnership aimed at responding to the challenges of our ageing population, the demographic revolution demands a concerted response from science as well as policy makers."
