Chalmers matematics selected, high -level internationalization

Once again, it has been shown that Mathematics at the Chalmers University of Technology is held in high repute. When the renowned German Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft sought its very first partner in academic Europe, the choice was the Department of Mathematics at the Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg, Sweden. This opens the doors to major sectors of German industry for Chalmers researchers and, for their German counterparts, to Swedish industry.

The newly established Fraunhofer-Chalmers Research Center for Industrial Mathematics will be devoted to applied mathematics for industrial purposes. The heart of the German side is the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (FhG), which has a turnover of SEK 9 billion per year.

Under the Fraunhofer umbrella are 56 institutes in Germany as well as research centers in the US and Asia. Now as FhG turns to Europe for the first time to find a partner, the primary choice falls on mathematicians at Chalmers. "We are extremely proud of this," says the Chair of the Board for the new collaborative center, Professor Peter Jagers. He is eager to highlight what the Swedish government proposes in its latest parliamentary bill for research funding regarding the importance of finding good forms of cooperation between universities and industry, adding that there is no better partner to be found when it comes to efficiently applying research findings to industry.

Chalmers and Fraunhofer complement each other extremely well. Chalmers has long had excellent collaboration with major Swedish industrial concerns, whereas FhG's Institute for Industrial Mathematics, ITWM, cooperates extensively with small and medium-sized industries in Germany. In terms of content, Chalmers is strong on Probability and Mathematical Statistics, while FhG's strength is in Computational Technology. Immediate collaborative projects will target fields such as fatigue in materials, biostatistics geared to the pharmaceutical industry, problems of optimization, and techniques for industrial quality assurance.
